Concert Video: My Heart Be Brave

Writer: Elaine CunninghamElaine Cunningham

A short selection from BORN OF LIGHT, a concert presented on November 10, 2024 at Grace Episcopal Church in Providence. Written by Marques L.A Garret, setting  a poem ("Sonnet") by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938.)

My heart be brave, and do not falter so,

Nor utter more that deep, despairing wail.

Thy way is very dark and drear I know,

But do not let thy strength and courage fail;

For certain as the raven-winged night

Is followed by the bright and blushing morn,

Thy coming morrow will be clear and bright;

’Tis darkest when the night is furthest worn.

Look up, and out, beyond, surrounding clouds,

And do not in thine own gross darkness grope,

Rise up, and casting off thy hind’ring shrouds,

Cling thou to this, and ever inspiring hope:

   Tho’ thick the battle and tho’ fierce the fight,

   There is [a] power [in] making for the right.

The Providence Singers are committed to making concert recordings available to all. This year's 401Gives campaign will focus on raising funds to support recording, editing, and musician fees necessary to make this happen. Not familiar with 41Gives? This annual event occures on April 1, when Rhode Island celebrates and supports our varied and vibrant nonprofit community. As you make your giving plans for this year's campaign, we hope you'll keep the Providence Singers in mind. Here's a link to our 401Gives campaign pages.
